New York Mets catcher Gary Carter was named the recipient of the 19th Roberto Clemente Award, presented annually to the player who best exemplifies the game of baseball both on and off the field. Carter has been the national sports chairman for the Leukemia Society of America since 1985.

The award was presented by Vera Clemente, the widow of Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente. Carter is sixth on the all-time list for most games caught with 1,799. He has been on the disabled list since May 12 because of a knee injury.
