A U.S. Navy pilot was killed when his A-4 fighter jet crashed on a training flight outside the American-operated Subic Bay Naval Base, U.S. armed forces television said Wednesday.
The pilot was identified as Lt. j.g. Richard Armbruster, 28, Cedar City, Utah.The Far East Network of armed forces television said Armbruster's plane vanished while on training exercise Tuesday. Rescuers found the plane's wreckage Wednesday morning on a mountain range west of Subic, 50 miles northwest of Manila.
The cause of the crash was under investigation.
Armbruster, a former Cobra helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army who was decorated for his service in Grenada, was assigned to the Fleet Composite Squadron 5 in Cubi Point Naval Air Station, the network said.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra.
