Vince Coleman of the St. Louis Cardinals had his major league record of 50 consecutive steals ended when he was thrown out by Montreal's Nelson Santovenia in the fourth inning of Friday night's game with the Expos.
Coleman, who was last thrown out by Damon Berryhill on Sept. 11, 1988, beat out an infield single to lead off the fourth and broke for second on a 0-1 pitch of Ozzie Smith.Santovenia backhanded the inside pitch and made a strong throw to shortstop Jeff Huson to nab Coleman.
Coleman, the major league leader in stolen bases this season, was 44-for-44 entering game.
