Leftist guerrillas Monday opened fire with automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades on a military guard post. One attacker was killed in the fighting.
Mauricio Gutierrez Castro, the new chief justice of the Supreme Court, said he was also slightly injured in a rebel attack Sunday evening as he was driving back from a nearby beach with his family. The body of a slain guerrilla was seen lying on the road near where the 30-minute gun battle took place at dawn. The rebel appeared to be the only casualty of the fighting.
No government troops here hurt, the armed forces press office said in a news release. The military post guards the entrance of a San Salvador residential neighborhood where many army officers live.
Appearing on a television news show early Monday, Gutierrez said his car and a second vehicle with bodyguards were caught at a roadblock the guerrillas had set about 10 miles south of San Salvador.
