The Alvin Gittins Gallery at the University of Utah will display through Aug. 29 the award-winning entries in the annual Student Art Show. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no admission charge.
Rich Rasmussen has received the Best of Show award for his painting, "Contradicto In Adjecto."Other winners include Shelley Turley, drawing; Jamie Axtell, fibers; Heather Hadlock, painting; Chris Bertagnole, photography; Chariya Ernst, printmaking; Darin Biniaz, ceramic sculpture; Joe Esquibel, graphic design; Chris Miles, illustration; Kent Birkinshaw, sculpture; Wendy Chidester, watercolor; Lin Jiang, life study; and Phil Jenkins, pottery.
Other departmental scholarships and awards also have been given to Laurel Mabey, a graduate student, who has received the $1,500 Ethel Armstrong Rolapp Award for Excellence in the Fine Arts.
Graduate students Ellen Quintero and Lin Jiang have been awarded Alvin Gittins Fellowships.
Departmental scholarships have been awarded to Mark Ashton, Joe Esquibel, Heather Hadlock and Lane Marble. Florence Ware scholarships have been awarded to Shelly Cutler and Jay Pfeifer. Graduate research fellowships have been awarded to Stacey Cole and Julie Epperson.
Josie Fife, Willa Marie Huelskamp, Dawn Atkin, Karen Gollaher, Kristina Reynolds, Kent Birkinshaw, Brett Thayer, Chris Miles and Rich Rasmussen have received funds to attend the annual Monterey Bay Watercolor Workshop.
D. Ray Owen, a retired Salt Lake attorney and artist, each year supports a limited number of students who wish to attend. Owen has also donated funds to establish the Owen Reading Room in the Art Department that contains more than 40 periodicals and numerous books about art.
