Army security forces conducted sweeps through parts of Kabul and outlying areas for a second day Wednesday to thwart rocket attacks by U.S.-backed rebels that have killed more than 78 people in 10 days, officials said.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Nabi Amani said the sweeps eliminated 90 percent of the "immediate threat" from rocket strikes on the mountain-ringed city.Amani said security forces detained about 100 people in two days of raids and all but five were released.
The sweeps began Tuesday after repeated rocket attacks on the citadel of President Najibullah.
