The death toll stood at 116 as rescue squads pulled five more bodies from under the tons of mud dislodged by an earthquake that rocked Indonesia's easternmost province, officials said Saturday.
J.T.L. Palittin, the provincial social officer in Jarapura, the capital of Irian Jaya province, said, "Workers have recovered more bodies and the search will continue" for others with many villages still buried under earth.Rescue teams also found more injured people, bringing to 178 the number of injured.
The bodies and injured were discovered by rescuers on the slopes in the Soba village, where the total population is 4,500.
The death toll could soar further since many villages were still buried under masses of earth when collapsing hill covered the area, he said.
Landslides triggered by Tuesday's quake, measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale, hit 11 villages. Rescue teams have evacuated more than 700 inhabitants from the stricken area.
