-An exhibition of 41 photographs by many of the most influential photographers of this century opens Monday, Sept. 25 in the Collett Art Gallery at Weber State College.

Titled "Faces," the exhibition has been drawn from the collection of Hallmark Cards, Inc. and highlights the expressive power of the human face. Included is Edward Steichen's well-known portrait of Greta Garbo, Annie Leibovitz's portrait of Meryl Streep and Duane Michals' picture of Rene Magritte.An opening reception has been set for Thursday, Sept. 28, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The public is invited. A lecture has also been planned (see below). Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Fridays.

-The top 100 artists in the 1989 national "Arts for the Parks" competition have been announced, and the names of five Utahns are included. They are: Michael Coleman, Glen Edwards, Kay Homan, Ben Schnirel and Larry Winborg.

In its third year, the Arts for the Parks contest continues to be one of the largest art competitions in the country showcasing American representational painting. This year's winners were selected from 2,323 entries submitted by artists from 49 of the 50 states.

Michael Coleman of Provo has placed in the "top 100" for three years. In the first year's contest, his painting of black bears was selected as the first National Park Collector Print.

The recipient of this year's grand prize of $100,000 is Martha Borge of Point Reyes Station, California.

-The Timpanogos Cave National Monument is currently hosting an art exhibit by Joseph S. Venus of Sandy, Utah. Included are paintings of mountain men as well as other western and wildlife subject matter. According to Monument Superintendent Michael O. Hill, the exhibit is part of a continuing program of local and national art and photography exhibits at the Visitor Center. Venus' works will continue to be displayed through Sunday, Oct. 1. Center hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily.

-On the heels of a very successful international crib quilt contest, the Museum of American Folk Art has just announced The Great American Quilt Festival 3. Scheduled for April, 1991, this competition will consist of four quilting contests - "Discover America"; "Friends Sharing America," a quilt made by a group; "Young People's America," a children's contest; and "America's Flower Garden." -The Salt Lake City Art Council is compiling a history of artists who have exhibited in the facility since 1931. Records are sparse between 1940 and 1965. Visual artists or persons with information about those who exhibited during this period are encouraged to contact the Art Council at 596-5000.

-The public is invited to attend an exhibition by noted Utah painters Dr. Homer H. Clark, James H. Wilson and Larry C. Winborg. It will be held in the historic Western Savings and Loan Building, 151 South Main St. Exhibition hours are 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, Sept. 26-28. Parking is available at the Walker Center (enter on Regency Street).
