Gordon C. Young, the man responsible for purchasing and preserving the Brigham Young winter home in St. George, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1989, in a Salt Lake hospital of automobile accident injuries. He was 90.

Mr. Young was the great-grandson of Brigham Young and served for many years as president of the Brigham Young Family Association.He was a veteran of World War I, after which he was called in 1919 to serve a mission to New Zealand for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mr. Young returned to New Zealand in 1948 as mission president, serving until 1951.

While in New Zealand, he purchased the land on which the LDS temple and the Church College of New Zealand now stand.

Mr. Young was famous for his organic gardens cultivated on about an acre of land near Willow Creek. His gardening prowess was featured in the Deseret News in 1971, 1974, 1977 and 1985.

The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Brighton 5th Ward, 2525 E. Bengal Blvd. Friends may call at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, from 6-8 p.m. Friday, or at the chapel one hour before the service. Burial will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
