A Brigham Young University professor has been awarded a $10,000 grant to fund a state math coalition, a spokesman said.

Hal G. Moore was one of 25 educators in the nation chosen for a grant by the Mathematical Sciences Education Board of the National Research Council, BYU spokesman Phil Webb said.Moore said the money will be used to establish a state math coalition.

"There is a lot of anxiety about math in our schools," the professor said. "Our technical skills are so low compared to other countries that it will be an economic problem for the United States."

A meeting has been scheduled Feb. 16 at Westminster College in Salt Lake City to chose coalition members.
