The callings of 10 new mission presidents have been announced by the First Presidency. They will be assigned to specific missions later and, along with their wives, will assume their positions around July 1. The mission presidents are:
Fred Clark Adams, 68, Verdemont Ward, San Bernardino California Stake; ward financial clerk and sealer in Los Angeles Temple, former stake president, bishop and temple ordinance worker; served mission in Texas, 1941-44; self-employed; received bachelor's and master's degrees from BYU; born in Salt Lake City, Utah, a son of Alfred Franklin and Sarah Ellen Brown Adams; married Ella Lou Stowell; eight children. She is an early morning seminary teacher, former stake and ward Young Women president, stake and ward Relief Society president, gospel doctrine teacher, and seminary teacher; born in Maywood, Calif., a daughter of James Adelbert and Opel Odesa Scott Stowell.Randy LaMar Bott, 45, Millville 3rd Ward, Providence Utah South Stake; stake president's counselor, former stake mission president, bishop's counselor, high priests group leader, and Young Men president; served a mission in Samoa, 1964-67; Church Educational System seminary principal; received bachelor's and master's degrees from Utah State University and doctorate from BYU; born in Logan, Utah, a son of LaMar Nephi Bott (deceased) and Dorella Braegger Bott Harris; married Vickie Lee Pehrson; six children. She is nursery leader, former Relief Society president and counselor, Young Women president, and Primary chorister; born in Logan, Utah, a daughter of Karl Alexander and May Anderson Pehrson.
Jay LeRoy Christensen, 63, Royal 1st Ward, Othello Washington Stake; regional representative, former stake president and counselor, high councilor, bishop and Young Men president; farmer; born in Shelley, Idaho, a son of LeRoy and Lucy Fay Wilson Christensen; married Erma Louise Wirt; six children. She is a ward organist, Relief Society organist and Relief Society teacher, former stake Relief Society president's counselor, Primary, Young Women and Relief Society secretary, organist, Relief Society teacher, and in-service leader; born in Mediapolis, Iowa, a daughter of Julius Jacob William and Mildred Isabel Getty Wirt.
Ralph Layton Cottrell Jr., 60, Ogden 80th Ward, South Ogden Utah Stake; gospel doctrine teacher, former high councilor, bishop, seventies president, and branch president's counselor; served mission in Great Lakes area, 1950-52; Church Educational System institute instructor; received bachelor's degree from University of Utah, master's degree from BYU, and doctorate from University of Southern California; born in Kaysville, Utah, a son of Ralph Layton and Vera Estella Layton Cottrell; married Luda Lee Robinson; three children. William Barney Gogarty, 60, Littleton 4th Ward, Littleton Colorado Stake; stake patriarch, former stake president's counselor, high councilor, and bishop; oil industry consultant and teacher; received bachelor's and doctorate from University of Utah; born in Provo, Utah, a son of William Bernard and Zola Walker Gogarty; married Lois Gay Pritchett; five children. James Edwin Mangum, 63, Suncrest 4th Ward, Orem Utah Suncrest Stake; Missionary Training Center president's counselor, former stake president and counselor, bishop and elders quorum president; retired; received bachelor's degree from BYU and completed some graduate study at BYU; born in Helper, Utah, a son of John Darwin and Leola MaryAnn Grange Mangum; married Shirley Rae Arnold; 10 children. Gordon Ellis Mauss, 50, Long Beach 11th Ward, Long Beach California Stake; mission president's counselor, former regional representative's executive secretary, stake president's counselor, high councilor, and bishop; served in New England States Mission, 1960-62; Church Educational System area director; received bachelor's and master's degrees from BYU and doctorate from University of Southern California; born in Oakland, Calif., a son of Vinal Grant and Ethel Louise Lind Mauss; married Barbara Bastian; five children.
