Alfred Keller Cherry, age 90, an attorney, of Chandler, died Saturday, December 23, 1990 at Chandler Regional Hospital.
Mr. Cherry was born in Manti, Utah, March 29, 1899. He was the son of James W. Cherry, former Chief Justice of the Utah Supreme Court. His wife Martha, is the daughter of the late Lewis Telle and Martha Howell Cannon. He was a combat veteran of World War I, and saw action at Chateau Thiery, Soissons, and the Argonne. He was a graduate of George Washington University Law School and was in government service from 1925 until his retirement in 1958. A member of the bar of the District of Columbia and the Supreme Court of the United States, he was assitant legislative counsel to the United States Senate from 1925 to 1931, counsel to the Under Secretary of the Treasury 1931-1933, and counsel to the Federal Reserve Board from 1933-1958. Mr. Cherry drafted several pieces of historic legislation including the bill that over turned the gold standard. Mr. Cherry moved to Chandler from Washington D.C. in 1959 and became active in Chandler affairs. He served on the Chandler School Board 1961-1965 and was a member of the Chandler City Council from 1970-1974. He was a life member of Sigma Chi fraternity.He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Martha "Martie" Cannon Cherry, two daughters, Martha Louise Watts, Cedarburg, Wisconsin; and Mimi Mason, Scottsdale; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, two brothers, James, Phoenix; Keller, of San Francisco; two sisters, Louise Cherry, of Boise, Idaho; and Mary Robert, Salt Lake City, Utah.
