Dr. Greggory R. DeVore, former director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at LDS Hospital, has opened a private center specializing in fetal diagnostic ultrasound.

His Fetal Diagnostic Center is located in the South Temple Medical Center, 508 E. South Temple.DeVore, one of the pioneers of fetal echocardiography, has recently acquired a new generation of ultrasound equipment that enables ultrasounds to be displayed not only in black and white, but also in color, which is necessary to accurately diagnose fetal heart defects.

"Fetal echocardiography, used in this manner, could decrease the cost of identifying Down's syndrome and other lethal chromosomal disorders to insurance carriers by over 75 percent," DeVore said in a recent series of lectures at Harvard University. "However, the problem is that there are only a few physicians in the United States with expertise to use this diagnostic tool in this fashion."

DeVore said fetal echocardiography is also useful in examining fetuses of mothers with diabetes, those who have been exposed to drugs associated with birth defects, and patients who have a family history of congenital heart disease.
