Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov opened the second half of their World Chess Championship on Saturday with an adjourned game.
They relocated from the United States to France during a break of more than two weeks. They were tied at six points each after the first 12 games in New York City, which were played Oct. 8 through Nov. 7.Kasparov, 27, the defending champion, and Karpov, 39, battled Saturday for 41 moves over five hours.
At the adjournment, Kasparov had just taken a pawn to finish with five pawns, a rook and the king. Karpov had four pawns, a rook and a king, and he was about to take a black pawn to even things up again.
Karpov waited more than 10 minutes as the five-hour time limit drew close before sealing his 42nd move. Most experts agreed that the game was headed to a draw.
Play is to resume Sunday at 9 a.m. MST, although each of the players may offer a draw or even concede before play restarts.
The first player to gain 121/2 points wins the championship and $1.7 million of a $3 million purse. In the event of a tie, Kasparov keeps the title.
