One of the nation's largest private financers of the arts recently announced more than $2 million in grants to theater, dance and music groups across the country.
Among the arts groups receiving money from the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund is the Crossroads Theatre Company, a black company based in New Brunswick, N.J., fund president M. Christine DeVita said.The company received $600,000 for its college exchange program and touring company.
Other theater groups included the Perserverance Theater, an Alaska-based American Indian company, which received a $58,000 grant.
The largest grant for dance was $150,000, which went to ODC-San Francisco, formerly the Oberlin Dance Company. The money was earmarked for a dance production of "The Velveteen Rabbit," a children's story by Margery Williams.
In music, the fund gave a three-year, $150,000 grant to the American Composers Orchestra for its revival of important masterworks of recent Amerian music.
