The Wasatch Orienteering Club, in conjunction with the Brigham Young University Army ROTC, will host its 1990 Winter Ski Meet Saturday, March 3, at the Rock Canyon Reservoir.
The meet is open to all Boy Scouts and LDS youth groups interested in competing on snowshoe, ski and snowmobile courses with the use of a compass and map.Maj. Bob Turbyfill, meet director and course setter, has prepared an orienteering map that will be challenging yet achievable, he said. Turbyfill is a former North American orienteering champion.
Participants will be able to choose from snowmobiles, skis or snowhoes in completing the courses. Besides the competitive courses, shorter recreational courses have also been laid out.
The meet is an opportunity for Boy Scouts to get the first-class Scout orienteering requirements for the orienteering merit badge. They should bring their merit badge cards with them to the meet.
The Rock Canyon Reservoir is just northeast of the Provo LDS Temple. If there is insufficient snow, the alternate site is at Aspen Grove above Sundance.
Cost is $1 or $10 for a group in advance. Cost is $2 per person the day of the meet. Compasses may be rented for a nominal fee.
