A man was killed in a crash at Riverside Park in Salt Lake City Saturday night, and in a separate accident near Nephi a Pennsylvania man was killed and three University of Utah students injured - one critically - as they were on their way to celebrate spring break in California.
KILLED:Robert Woldorf, 19, Harrisburg, Pa.
The name of the victim of the Salt Lake accident had not been released.
A 1955 Ford Crown Victory was westbound on 600 North at 1500 West when the vehicle left the road, crashed through a fence at Riverside Park and smashed into a cinder-block fence. Police said the victim is believed to have been the driver of the vehicle and was thrown out of the driver's-side window, hitting a fence pole.
"A witness said she saw the car hit the fence at about 50 mph," said investigating officer Art Vantielen of the Salt Lake Police Department. A passenger, Larry De Herrera, address unknown, is in serious condition at LDS Hospital.
The other accident occurred about 2 a.m. Saturday on I-15, about 15 miles south of Nephi. The driver, Nicolas Karlson, 20, of New York, apparently lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll several times and go into the median, said Utah Highway Patrol trooper Steve Pelton.
Woldorf, a passenger in the vehicle, was dead at the scene. He was a friend of the three students and was accompanying them to Newport Beach, Calif., the trooper said.
Jason Davis, 19, of Farmington, was ejected from the vehicle and taken to LDS Hospital by Life Flight helicopter. He was in critical condition Saturday, a nursing supervisor said. Another passenger, Mark Vogel, 22, of Salt Lake City, received minor injuries.
Karlson was also treated for minor injuries at Central Valley Medical Center and was then booked into the Juab County Jail for investigation of automobile homicide, Pelton said.
