Two Salt Lake men remained in the Salt Lake County Jail Monday as detectives continued putting together a criminal complaint in the Marie Callender Pies homicide.
Grant David Stensrud, 20, 570 S. 900 East, and Thomas Evan Trujillo, 22, 739 S. 800 East - both of whom have prior felony records - were booked into jail Saturday evening on suspicion of criminal homicide, according to jail and court records. They are being investigated in connection with the death of Victor Aguilar, 37, a West Valley father of four who was stabbed in the throat during an apparent burglary at Marie Callender Pies restaurant, 52 W. 200 South.
According to probable cause statements filed with the jail, the two men are being held on $100,000 bail each because of incriminating statements and physical evidence gathered by detectives.
Police believe Aguilar, a chef who was arriving for work about 4 a.m., may have surprised the burglars, who had entered the establishment by breaking a rear window.
Within hours, detectives interviewed Stensrud and Trujillo and searched three homes in Salt Lake City, recovering several hundred dollars and other items believed taken in the burglary. A restaurant safe was recovered from Emigration Canyon, and a suspected getaway car was located and impounded.
Trujillo was fired about a month ago by Marie Callender Pies for using the company van without permission, said Dave Ipaktchian, manager of Mullboon's Restaurant, 515 S. 700 East, which hired Trujillo three weeks ago.
Trujillo, who was wanted on a bench warrant for possession of a controlled substance, was using the alias Thomas Noffsinger, according to Ipaktchian and jail records.
Ipaktchian described Trujillo as a "good, quiet kid who kept to himself."
"I'm kind of shocked. He did a good job while he was here."
Stensrud is still on probation after pleading guilty to a reduced charges of burglary and theft, court records show. He was arrested Oct. 21, 1988, after a police officer observed him removing a duffel bag from a home in the 600 East block of Wilson Avenue, according to the records.
