Jim Unger's "Herman" comic strip has become the first American newspaper comic to cross the East German border.
" `Herman' has always been a cartoon with universal appeal," John P. McMeel, president of Universal Press Syndicate said. "Jim Unger's unique and unmatched sense of humor has enabled `Herman' to cross other borders and bring a smile to people in many different countries. Now, Universal Press is extremely proud to see this extended to East Germany.""Herman" will begin appearing immediately in two East German newspapers. Other U.S comic features have appeared in Eastern bloc magazines, but "Herman" will be the first of the newspaper variety and adds more evidence toward the actual crumbling of the Berlin Wall.
"Herman" appears in 350 newspapers, in the U.S. and 24 foreign countries. The comic was selected as the Best Syndicated Panel in 1982 and 1988 by a vote of the National Cartoonists Society.
