The first fatality in 24 years of annual Easter Jeep Safaris occurred Wednesday about two miles west of the Potash Road.

According to the accident report, James L. Wilkins, 42, Poway, Calif., was killed in a rollover in Long Canyon during a guided pre-Safari run along the Secret Spire Trail. The Grand County Sheriff's Office was notified about 6:53 p.m. and dispatched a county ambulance crew with assistance from Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Ken Ballantyne.Investigating officer Steve Brownelle reported that Wilkins had been driving a 1974 Jeep that veered off the roadway and overturned down an embankment. He died at the scene.

A friend traveling in a vehicle immediately in front witnessed the accident.
