So you think you have been badly put upon to send a few dozen or even a few hundred W-2 forms to your employees, notifying them of how much they earned and how much they paid in taxes in 1989.

Consider the people at SOS Temporary Services who have sent 20,000 W-2 forms. But company officials aren't complaining because the large number of W-2 forms means the temporary services business has been booming.Dick Reinhold, SOS president, said one stack of the forms was 8 feet high and another was 31/2 feet before they were mailed to those who worked through the company for temporary employment.

Reinhold, who is president of the National Association of Temporary Services, said 6.5 million Americans work in the temporary services industry and more than 1 million people are assigned to temporary jobs every day.

"We credit this trend primarily to companies' increased emphasis on the bottom lines. They're finding flexible staffing is a workable alternative that gives them more freedom and, often, more profits," said Reinhold.
