Mechanical problems with telephone lines at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center have been fixed, according to a hospital official.

In recent weeks many calls being made to the medical center's main switchboard went unanswered or were answered after as many as 30 rings.Utah Valley and US WEST officials said mechanical and technical problems with the phone lines caused the problem. Mike Rawson, support services manager at Utah Valley, said the medical center was unaware of problems with its phone system until complaints were filed.

"We would like to apologize to anyone who encountered that problem when they called the medical center," Rawson said.

Rawson said that if callers encounter the problem again, they should contact him. He also encourages people to use the direct line into the department they are calling; department numbers are listed in the phone directory.
