Utah State University environmental engineer R. Ryan Dupont has received a national award for the creation of a program on "Remediation of Hazardous Waste Contaminated Soils."

The award is given by the Conferences and Institutes Division of the National University Continuing Education Association. The citation recognizes creativity and method of educational delivery as well as the program's ability to "meet the needs of important constituencies and make a difference in people's lives," according to NUCEA awards chairwoman Rebecca Quinlan. Quinlan said the program represents "outstanding continuing education initiative."

The five-day course, taught at USU last year, provided a summary of soil fundamentals critical to understanding hazardous-waste transport in soils. Two days were spent on case studies and remediation strategies, applying laboratory information to field treatments. Optional evening sessions addressed several topics.

Dupont said the course was designed for people in private industry, regulatory agencies, consulting firms and universities that are involved in any way in remedying soils contaminated with hazardous waste.
