Sen. Jake Garn, R-Utah, departed Friday on an 11-day, fact-finding trip researching export controls to West Berlin, East Germany, Hungary, Poland and Czechoslovakia.

The trip is part of his work on the Senate Banking Committee. Garn's press secretary, Laurie Snow-Turner, said senators wanted to see how U.S. export policy is affecting economic reform movements in eastern Europe. The trip is in preparation for reauthorization of the Export Administration Act later this year.Other banking committee members on the trip include John Heinz, R-Pa.; John Chaffee, R-R.I.; and Christopher Bond, R-Mo. All senators are accompanied by their wives.

They are scheduled to have briefings with U.S. and foreign officials in West Berlin; East Berlin; Pottsdam, East Germany; Budapest, Hungary; Krakow and Warsaw, Poland; and Prague, Czechoslovakia.
