The University of Utah's theater department and the school's Division of Continuing Education have announced a six-day course for elementary school teachers (kindergarten through sixth grade), to be taught later this summer.
The "Theatre Workshop" course, according to Xan S. Johnson, associate professor at the U., will fulfill the required Utah state curriculum by providing educators with the tools to use drama/theater as a learning medium to teach other curricula, while building self-esteem among students.Lane change credit has been approved.
Topics for the course, scheduled for Aug. 13-18, include role-playing experiences in narrative pantomime, improvisation and story dramatization.
"Through role-playing," says Johnson, "teachers experience how creative drama can be applied to areas such as social studies, reading and classroom behavior."
One day will be devoted to the creation of lesson plans that the teacher can use immediately in his or her classroom.
Workshop sessions will be held Monday-Friday, from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 18, from noon to 4 p.m.
Site for the workshop is the West Institute Building, located at the corner of 300 South and University.
Participants may register through the DCE (Theatre 56OR-2 for three hours of credit or Theatre 56R-2, non-credit). For more information, call 581-6356.
