Carole Bayer Sager and Toni Wine's "A Groovy Kind of Love" has been named Song of the Year by BMI, symbolic of its having been the past year's most played pop composition.
Antonio "L.A." Reid and Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds were named Songwriters of the Year, and EMI Music Catalogs was named Publisher of the Year at a black-tie gala, which this year celebrated BMI's 50th anniversary.BMI is the world's largest performing rights organization, representing more than 100,000 songwriters, composers and publishers from around the world in all areas of music. The organization keeps track of the number of times a song is played on the air, and collects the royalties for the artists.
The organization also presented a 5-million-performance award to Richard Addrisi, who wrote "Never My Love" with his late brother, Donald.
"A Groovy Kind of Love" was first released in 1965 by The Mindbenders.
Reid and Edmonds won for such hits as "Every Little Step," "The Lover in Me," "On Our Own," "Roni," "Secret Rendezvous," "Superwoman," and "The Way You Love Me."
