For John and Kay Jensen, horses are very much a part of the family scene.
They have seven horses that eat hay and grain and need exercising daily. And daughters Kendra and Kani help out with those chores - especially the exercising. As a result, the family room at the Jensen home is gradually filling up with trophies.
Kendra, a freshman at Manti High School, has been chosen the 1990 state high school rodeo queen. She won it riding Wildfire, one of the seven Jensen horses.
And in winning the crown, Kendra also won the horsemanship and Miss Congeniality awards.
Kani, a student at the Ephraim Middle School, is following in her big sister's footsteps. She'll reign over the Ephraim Stampede next month.
In the stampede queen contest, Kani rode Mo, somewhat gentler than Wildfire, but lively enough for a 13-year-old.
Their mother, Kay, a registered nurse, says she doesn't have much time for riding but is sometimes called upon to apply the liniment to her daughters.
John, their father, who helps run Jensen's Department Store, prefers riding four-wheelers. And he admits that buying hay and oats for seven horses and new outfits for two daughters keeps his pocketbook somewhat flat.
That, of course, and traveling to rodeos around the state.
