A Utah State University project on the measurement and modeling of joint damping in space structures was among 11 recently picked by NASA for flight development in its Space Technology Experiments Program (IN-STEP).

The USU proposal was among 50 submitted to IN-STEP, said Frank Redd, director of USU's Center for Space Engineering. Of the 11 projects selected by NASA for further work, nine are from industry and two are from universities - USU and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.Redd and assistant professor of mechanical engineering Steve Folkman are principal investigators on the USU joint damping project, which involves design and analysis of joints to be used in putting together space structures.
