Private donors and officials from Salt Lake City and Salt Lake City School District cut a ribbon Friday afternoon, officially opening the Steiner Aquatics Center, 645 S. Guardsman Way.
The $2.1 million facility - financed by private, city and school district funds - includes a completed 50-meter outdoor pool and 25-meter indoor pool, is scheduled for completion in September 1990. The pools will be open to the public and will provide open-plunge, lap swimming, swim lessons, swim team programs and various other programs. The pools will also be used by Highland and East high school swim teams, said Salt Lake School Superintendent John Bennion.
Kimball Young, a local resident who helped develop the center, said the project has taken five years to come to fruition. He said he hopes that the pool can fulfill the plan to make it self-supporting.
Mayor Palmer DePaulis agreed.
"We are looking forward to the first financial statement in the black," he said.
The Salt Lake City Parks and Recreation Department will oversee the new facility. The center is the proposed site for an Olympic ice rink and a speed-skating oval.
