Former Ogden resident and president of the Ogden-based Amalgamated Sugar, Arthur E. Benning, died of a heart attack in Perugia, Italy, Thursday, June 28, 1990. He had been residing in Pebble Beach, Calif.

Benning was raised in the sugar business. He began his career in 1932 working in his father's Ogden factory as a mechanical helper. In 1962 he succeeded his father, H.A. Benning, as president. In 1976, Arthur Benning was elected chairman of the board at Amalgamated Sugar. He retired in 1982 after 50 years of service.Benning also served as a member of the boards of directors at First Security Corp., Utah Power and Light Co. and Browning Arms. He was a trustee of the United States Best Sugar Association.

At Benning's request, no services were held.
