Tradition says that if it rains here on St. Swithin's it will rain for 40 more days. If the day is fair, 40 days without rain will follow.St. Swithin, appointed bishop of Winchester in 852, was an adviser to Ethelwulf, king of the West Saxons. History does not explain his prowess as a weather forecaster.
