Thailand's foreign minister, architect of its hard-line stance this past decade on Vietnam's invasion of Cambodia, lost his post in a major Cabinet reshuffle Monday.

Five new deputy prime ministers were named and the heads of six of the 13 ministries were replaced in the shakeup, which was engineered by Prime Minister Chatichai Choonhavan and announced by his office. It was designed to boost the government's image after corruption scandals in which two deputy ministers had been fired.

Siddhi Savetsila, foreign minister since 1980, was replaced by Subin Pinkayan, who had been commerce minister. Siddhi's deputy, Prapas Limpabhandu, also was replaced. They both belonged to the scandal-plagued Social Action Party but were not themselves accused of any wrongdoing.
