Del Monte Foods has recalled more than 20,000 cans of green beans because some of the beans were not cooked and could pose a health hazard, the Food and Drug Administration said. FDA spokeswoman Faye Peterson said Del Monte of San Francisco is voluntarily recalling 843 cases, each containing 24 16-ounce cans of French-style green beans, because 50 cases of the beans weren't cooked.

No reports of death or illness have been reported to the FDA, but the uncooked beans should not be eaten because they could harbor microbes that could cause food poisoning. The cans were packed and shipped in July to 140 Pathmark stores in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey and the New York City area. The cans bear a one-line code, 0201J6F82, printed on the bottom end of the can, Peterson said.

Pathmark has removed all the suspect cans from store shelves, but it is feared some may still be in consumer hands, Peterson said. Anyone with cans bearing the code should return them to the store.
