Prince Charles was resting comfortably Saturday following three hours of surgery to repair a bone in his right arm that has not healed since he broke it in a fall from his polo horse two months ago, a hospital official said.

"The prince of Wales' condition is excellent," said Nigel Clifton, general manager of Queen's Medical Center in Nottingham. "I am told that he is already moving his arm. He will experience some pain, but the pain is under control."Charles was expected to stay in a private wing of the hospital for up to 10 days, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The prince's arm has been in a plaster cast since June 23 when he fell off a horse during a polo match. His upper arm bone was broken in two places, and the fracture nearer the elbow joint has failed to heal.

In a three-hour operation, a metal plate was permanently placed on the humerus to stabilize the bone while a graft taken from the pelvis and placed around the fracture works to promote healing, doctors said.

Doctors said a great deal of his recovery would depend on physiotherapy, and Charles may be left with a permanent restriction in the use of his elbow.
