Portuguese President Mario Soares called his landslide re-election a "victory of tolerance" because he received support across the political spectrum.
The 67-year-old socialist leader captured 70.4 percent of the vote Sunday to win a second five-year term.It was the widest margin of victory in a presidential election since 48 years of rightist dictatorship ended in April 1974.
Under the Portuguese Constitution, the president is not allowed to belong to any party.

Right-of-center candidate Basilio Horta placed second with 14.1 percent of the vote, and Communist Carlos Carvalhas received 12.9 percent. Extreme-left candidate Carlos Marques was a distant fourth with 2.6 percent.
