As this city mourns its dead, the father of George Jo Hennard said Friday he believes a brain tumor may have caused his son to gun down 22 people in a Killeen cafeteria.
Police would not say whether preliminary results of an autopsy on Hennard showed any brain deformities, but that it did show he was not drunk or high on drugs. In a brief interview with Reuters in nearby Belton, Dr. George Hennard, who lives in Houston, said, "it was not drugs - it might have been a physical defect, like a brain tumor."
He said he had not seen his son in more than a year and didn't know him very well. The orthopedic surgeon would not comment further.
Hennard's mother told the Dallas Morning News she had spoken to her son Tuesday, his 35th birthday and the day before the massacre and that he sounded fine.
"This is so frightening, so devastating," she said.
A massive investigation was under way Friday by local and state police, the FBI and the Texas Rangers, who were trying to determine a motive for the worst U.S. shooting rampage.
Several churches held prayer vigils Friday. Clergymen said they were having a difficult time keeping up with requests for counseling.
