Mesa Community College's Stanley Green and Glendale Community College's Derrick Ray both scored twice to push their teams into a three-way first-place tie with Snow College in the Western States Football League.
All three schools have 5-1 records in league play after Saturday's action. Snow's 45-24 win over Wenatchee, Wash., in non-conference play Saturday pushed its overall record to 7-1. Mesa and Glendale have posted 6-1 records in overall play.Snow is ranked sixth nationally. Mesa, with a 43-7 win over Eastern Arizona, is seventh. Glendale, ranked ninth, beat Phoenix College 27-14.
In other action, 14th-ranked Ricks College beat Scottsdale 48-3 and Arizona Western upset 15th-ranked Dixie College 29-27 on Bobby Koning's 20-yard field goal with two seconds left in the game.
Green's four-yard touchdown run and 12-yard scoring pass from quarterback Rob Phillips aided Mesa in its win. Mesa safety Kareem Croxsell returned an interception 65 yards for a score and defensive end Paul Yatkowski had two sacks and two interceptions.
Ray scored on two four-yard runs and Lee DeVries rushed 28 times for 186 yards, including a four-yard scoring run, to keep Glendale in the race for the league crown. Quarterback Ray Lewis connected with Dustin Clark on an 11-yard scoring play.
Arizona Western quarterback Jermaine Whitaker connected with David Andrews on a 13-yard touchdown pass and Carlos Beatty on a 46-yard scoring strike.
