Philip Dimitrov was chosen Bulgaria's new prime minister in the parliament's first post-communist elections, and he pledged quick economic reform and special emphasis on ethnic peace and international cooperation.

Dimitrov, 36, a lawyer and leader of the Union of the Democratic Forces, overcame the Communist opposition in parliament to win election by secret ballot Friday by a count of 131-94. There were no abstensions.
