The Royal Opera House at Covent Garden has shut its doors indefinitely in the face of protests by its 120 orchestra members. Musicians want a 20 percent wage hike, and refused director Jeremy Isaacs' offer of a 5.5 percent increase, nearly 1.5 percent above the current rate of inflation. Britain is in recession, and the house's current deficit is approaching 1 million pounds ($1.7 million).
