To the editor:
I would like to know if an auto-attendant telephone system could be a practical and useful tool to inform voters of candidates running for public office. For example, after calling a number like 375-VOTE, the caller would be directed to push "1" to access a 10-20 minute recording of "Candidate Smith" giving in-depth information he or she thought would get him or her elected.
Every candidate would have his or her own access number. The candidate could make endorsements and give warnings about others running. Voting records could be included as well as a phone number to be used by voters to ask questions about the candidate. General election information also could be given (when and where to register/vote).
Well-informed voters help guard our system of government. A voter information tool like this would help empower voters and tend to put them on the offensive.
