Pablo Escobar, once considered one of the world's leading cocaine traffickers, is complaining that his competitors are flourishing while he serves out a jail term.

In an interview with The Dallas Morning News published Friday, Escobar said Colombia's secret police shielded other traffickers. He also said former police director Gen. Miguel Maza Marquez was helping the other traffickers, members of the so-called Cali cartel, rivals to Escobar's former Medellin cartel.

Escobar surrendered to authorities in June, taking advantage of a presidential decree offering lower sentences to criminals who gave up.
