The Australian government has decided to ban the import of pit bull terriers and three other breeds of dogs considered dangerous to the public, Resources Minister Alan Griffiths announced Monday.

The ban will apply to the Japanese Tosa, the Dogo Argentino and the Fila Braziliero as well as to genetic material such as semen and frozen embryos, Griffiths said.The decision was in response to a spate of attacks on children by dangerous dogs, he said in a statement.
