Captured fugitive Richard Church waived extradition Monday and will be returned to Illinois Monday afternoon to face charges in the 1988 stabbing deaths of his former girlfriend's parents.
Church appeared in a brief hearing before 3rd Circuit Judge Maurice Jones, who remanded him into the custody of Illinois detectives.Illinois detectives declined to comment following the hearing. But Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. David Bishop said the officers plan to accompany Church to Illinois Monday.
Church was arrested Wednesday in Salt Lake City after eluding capture since the Aug. 21, 1988, slayings of Ruth Ann and Raymond Ritter, both 45, in Woodstock, Ill. Colleen Ritter, then 17, and a 10-year-old brother also were attacked but survived.
Attorney Harold C. McKenney of Crystal Lake, Ill., told the Deseret News late Saturday in a telephone interview from Illinois that he wanted Church to return to his home where he "won't be alone and unprotected."
