Three-quarters of Guam remained without electricity Thursday as civil defense and other workers tried to recover from the 24-foot waves and 115 mph winds of Typhoon Yuri.

But Guam was spared the full brunt of Yuri, which with sustained winds of 165 mph and gusts of 200 mph was designated a super typhoon. It missed the island by 50 miles, officials said.No deaths were reported from the storm which neared the island Wednesday night, but all 400 residents of the southern village of Irajanan were among more than 2,600 people evacuated.
