Irwin Allen, producer of big-budget disaster epics including "The Towering Inferno" and "The Poseidon Adventure," died Saturday of a heart attack. He was 75.

Allen, a Malibu resident who had been semiretired for the past year, died at Santa Monica Hospital Medical Center. His health had been failing for several months, said hospital spokeswoman Grace Cheng said.Allen earned the nickname "Master of Disaster" because of his disaster hits. "People thrive on tragedy," he said. "It's unfortunate, but in my case, it's fortunate. He is survived by his wife, Sheila. His funeral is set for Wednesday.
