Soviet former gymnast Olga Korbut (1972 Munich Olympics), who now suffers effects of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, hopes to rally support for radiation victims. She told People magazine in its March 4 issue that life in Minsk, Byelorussia, a Soviet republic contaminated by the April 26, 1986, disaster, is "like Japan after the atomic bomb, when people were dying and suffering for years. You learn to accept people dying," she said. Korbut, 35, suffers thyroid problems and exhaustion related to radiation poisoning.
