How did the capital of Great Britain get its name?

Historians believe the word London derives from the Celtic Llyn-Din ("hill by the pool"). When the Romans arrived here in A.D. 43, they translated the Celtic name into Londinium. The Romans left in A.D. 423, and in time Londinium became London.
