Lupita Jones, of Mexicali, Mexico, was crowned the new Miss Universe Friday night as hundreds of her countrymen cheered wildly on the glitzy Las Vegas strip.

The 23-year-old beat out 20-year-old Paulien Huizinga, Miss Netherlands, and 18-year-old Yulia Lemigova, Miss USSR, a crowd favorite, who finished second runner-up.
