Arthur Samuel Macfarlane 73, a retired Navy commander who was also formerly assigned to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, died April 30, 1991, at his St. George home of cancer.

Mr. Macfarlane was born in St. George, attended the University of Utah and graduated from the University of Maryland. In December 1941 he joined the FBI and a year later became a Navy officer and pilot. He later served as an executive officer on a ship in the Middle East.He was officer in charge of Naval Air Transport Service on Manus Island and in Tokyo, spent two years on an admiral's staff in the Far East and served during World War II in the Atlantic, Pacific and Korea. From 1962 to 1964 he was assigned to the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
