The fossil, about a foot wide and weighing about 60 pounds, was in excellent condition. It was found in a side tunnel being dug by hand for use as an air duct, 200 feet below the sea bed and 10 miles off the English coast.Hugh Owen, deputy keeper of paleontology at Britain's Natural History Museum, said the fossil was that of an extinct variety of nautilus. But he said similar species still live in the Pacific Ocean.
